Christmas & New Year Holidays

The Department of Labour has information to help you manage staff holiday and leave entitlements for the Christmas and summer holiday season...

Visit www.dol.govt.nz/er/holidaysandleave to find out more.

The summer holiday season is fast approaching and the Department of Labour has information to help you manage staff leave entitlements.  To learn more about annual leave, public holidays, closedowns and transferring public holidays visit www.dol.govt.nz/er/holidaysandleave

Public holidays are generally celebrated on the day they fall. However where the employer and employee agree in writing to transfer the observance of the public holiday to another working day and where Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and 2nd of January either fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the pubic holiday is transferred to another day. For further information on public holidays during summer visit www.dol.govt.nz/er/holidaysandleave/publicholidays

Public holidays are celebrated on the day they fall. However where the employer and employee agree in writing to transfer the observance of the public holiday to another working day and where Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and 2nd of January either fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday is transferred.

The rule is that if these public holidays fall on either a Saturday or Sunday employees who normally work on these days celebrate the public holiday on these days; for employees who don’t normally work on a Saturday or Sunday the public holiday is transferred to the Monday or Tuesday respectively. To help you decide whether an employee is entitled to take the public holiday you will need to determine if the public holiday falls on an otherwise working day.  To assist you with this and to help you calculate pay the Department of Labour has a Holidays and Leave Tool.
